Red envelopes are one of the most beloved traditions of Lunar New Year, symbolizing good fortune, happiness, and prosperity for the year ahead. Traditionally given to children, family members, friends, and loved ones, the red color represents luck and is believed to help welcome positive energy while warding away misfortune.
More important than the money inside is the meaning behind the gesture, a sincere wish that the recipient enjoys a year filled with health, success, and abundance. The tradition also connects generations, allowing families and communities to share cultural values through a simple but meaningful act of giving.
At the Asian American Expo, red envelopes help bring that tradition to life, creating moments of excitement and joy while allowing everyone to participate in the spirit of Lunar New Year.
Elders and married adults pass red envelopes containing monetary gifts to children and unmarried younger relatives. Red represents good fortune, vitality, and protection from evil spirits — recipients receive the envelope with both hands and refrain from opening it in front of the giver.
Hongbao traditions follow strict rules: cash gifts must be in even amounts (odd numbers are for funerals), amounts with the number 8 are luckiest (it sounds like “wealth”), amounts with the number 4 are a major taboo (it sounds like “death”), and bills must be brand-new and uncreased.
